The Enigma of Room 622 review

Author: Joel Dicker

Release Date: September, 13th 2022

Genre: Crime

My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Official Description:

It all starts with an innocuous curiosity: at the Hotel de Verbier, a luxury hotel in the Swiss Alps, there is no Room 622.

This anomaly piques the interest of Joël Dicker, Switzerland's most famous literary star, who flees to the Verbier to recover from a bad breakup, mourn the death of his publisher, and begin his next novel.

Before he knows it, he's coaxed out of his slump by a fellow guest, who quickly uncovers the reason behind Room 622's erasure: an unsolved murder. The attendant circumstances: a love triangle and a power struggle at the heart of Switzerland's largest private bank, a mysterious counter-intelligence unit known only as P-30, and a shadowy émigré with more money than God.

A Russian doll of a mystery crafted with the precision of a Swiss watch, The Enigma of Room 622 is Joël Dicker's most diabolically addictive thriller yet.

My Thoughts The Enigma of Room 622 review

Joël Dicker weaves a tantalizing tapestry of mystery and drama in his latest novel, "The Enigma of Room 622." Set against the breathtaking backdrop of a luxurious hotel in the Swiss Alps, the novel introduces readers to a complex narrative that unfolds like the precision of a Swiss watch.

The story kicks off with the discovery of a corpse in Room 622, initiating an investigation that gradually fades into obscurity over the years. Enter Joël Dicker, a character who shares both the author's name and profession, seeking solace at the same hotel after a personal loss. Little does he know that he is about to become entangled in the unresolved mystery that once gripped the establishment.

Accompanied by Scarlett, an aspiring novelist and fellow guest, Dicker embarks on a journey to unravel the enigma, his path mirroring the intricate plot of his next thriller. Meanwhile, the narrative interweaves a succession drama at Switzerland’s largest private bank, introducing us to Macaire Ebezner's perilous race to the top after his father's demise. The board, led by the enigmatic Lev Levovitch, has plans of its own, turning Macaire’s ascent into a gripping race against time.

Dicker presents a "matryoshka doll of a mystery" where love triangles, power struggles, and shocking betrayals unfold against the backdrop of Switzerland, challenging the tranquil image associated with the country. The author's metafictional approach blurs the lines between reality and fiction, paying homage to his real-life publisher, Bernard de Fallois.

While the ambitious structure and depth of backstory may pose a challenge to some readers, those who persevere will be rewarded with a narrative that intensifies with each turn of the page. Occasionally stumbling in dialogue and character development, Dicker compensates with the overarching mystery and trademark twists that have become his signature.

“The Enigma of Room 622” stands as a testament to Dicker’s storytelling prowess, albeit not without a few hiccups along the way. It offers a thrilling ride for fans of the genre and a thought-provoking exploration of the intricate relationship between an author and his craft. In this novel, Dicker invites readers to unravel not only the mysteries within Room 622 but also the complexities of storytelling itself.
